Chinese wisteria is a deciduous woody vine capable of growing to 70 feet long. Stems can be large (10 inches in diameter) with smooth, tight gray to white bark. Alternate, pinnately compound leaves are tapered at the tip with wavy edges. Lavender, pink or white flowers are fragrant, very showy, and abundant and occur as dangling clusters. Seed are in a flattened bean-like pod. Invasions often occur around previous plantings. Chinese wisteria can displace native vegetation and kill trees and shrubs by girdling them. They have the ability to change the structure of a forest by killing trees and altering the light availability to the forest floor. A native of China, it was first introduced into America around 1830 for ornamental purposes.
Extremely popular vining plant that that eventually develops a thick trunk to 8'. Mature height is 25' or more. It produces masses of violet blue flowers appearing before the leaves. The racemes of flowers hang to 1 1/2' or more providing colorful display. The pinnate leaves are divided into 13 leaflets. Deciduous. Hardy to zone 5 and easily grown.
